This backyard on Education Hill in Redmond receives full sun in addition to reflected heat off the rock wall in the summer. The client wanted “cottagey” colorful beds – so I chose heat tolerant perennials and mixed in some annuals for immediate color.
The tricky design part was having a small bed on top of clay so we amended the soil to cope with drainage issues in the winter. Another design issue was the narrow width of the bed. We used more vertically growing plants and a variety of textures and colors to add visual interest. As final touch, we added 2 colorful pots to bring the entire design together.
